Guide to DFW Drive-In Movies and Concerts

As COVID continues to be a concern across the state and nation, many entertainment venues have adapted to the “new normal” by offering drive-in movies and/or concerts that you can view from the comfort and protection of your own car. It’s a drive-in revival! Since so many venues across the Metroplex are beginning to offer these drive-ins- and there are a couple long-standing drive-in theaters as well- I’ve put together a list of them here. Let’s go to the movies!

Cinema Pop-Ups at The Star in Frisco

Cinema Pop-Ups, a new pop up drive-in theater concept that is designed to create a safe and innovative type of drive-in theater, brings the classic nostalgia of a drive-in movie theater to The Star.  Enjoy all the features of these timeless outdoor theaters, brought into the 21st-century with the latest technologies, stunning visuals, and the latest and greatest Hollywood blockbusters!

Cinema Pop-Ups at The Star will bring a drive-in theater experience to the Gaylord Lot at The Star in Frisco with Edge of Tomorrow, 42 and more among the first titles being screened.

Tribeca Drive-In Series at AT&T Stadium

The “Tribeca Drive-In” series, which will feature an exciting slate of over 30 iconic films, comedy acts, and more is coming to AT&T Stadium July 2-26, 2020, providing families with a safe, comfortable entertainment experience that captivates audiences of all ages.

Drive-ins are a signature program for Tribeca; they have been a part of festival programming since the beginning 20 years ago, and Tribeca is now bringing this program nationwide. The series will take place each weekend (Thursday through Sunday) throughout the summer, beginning on July 2, 2020.

The Tribeca Drive-In series will encompass a variety of engaging and thoughtful themes in ​tribute to modern classics and all-time audience favorites​, such as: Music Movies with ​Selena, ​The Bodyguard, and Straight Outta Compton, Sports Sundays with ​Creed,​ Jerry Maguire, ​Space Jam, and​ Love and Basketball, Time Travel Comedies with ​Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure ​and ​Back to the Future, High School Comedies with ​Mean Girls and ​Superbad, Ladies’ Night with ​Girls Trip and ​Bridesmaids, Hit the Road with ​Talladega Nights and ​Fast & Furious, James Bond tribute with ​Goldfinger ​and ​Casino Royale, and Kids’ Night with ​Inside Out, ​The Lego Movie, and ​Spy Kids. There will also be a 4th of July Celebration featuring ​Field of Dreams, ​The Wizard of Oz, and a special ​25th Anniversary screening of Apollo 13.

Summer Drive-In Concert Series at TUPPS Brewery

Pepsi Summer Movie Series at Legacy Hall

While not technically a “drive-in” movie venue, Legacy Hall at Legacy West Plano is offering free movies on the big screen in the Box Garden all summer long. Masking and social distancing protocols will be strictly enforced. Visit Legacy Hall Events for line up and details. From Legacy Hall:

Addison Weekend Drive-In

Live music returns to the Addison Circle District with Addison Weekend Drive-In, three weekends of outdoor concerts featuring popular DFW bands. Enjoy the shows from the comfort of your vehicle, or bring lawn chairs to set next to your car for some fresh air. Music will be transmitted via both speaker system and FM radio, providing excellent audio quality no matter where you sit.

Admission is free for all ages. Only vehicles will be admitted into the event site.

Book an Addison hotel room for a relaxing staycation and enjoy a reserved front row parking space at both the Friday and Saturday night concerts. There will not be food vendors on-site; attendees are encouraged to support Addison restaurants via dine-in or takeout before the show.

Band performance will start at 8:30pm, lot will open at 7:30pm.

Walmart Drive-In

For families missing the big screen, Walmart will be working with Tribeca Enterprises for two drive-in experiences. Walmart is transforming 160 of its store parking lots into contact-free drive-in movie theaters where customers can safely gather to watch movies programmed by the Tribeca Drive-in team.

Beginning in August, Walmart will roll out this red carpet experience in towns across the country for a combined 320 showings. This family-friendly night will include hit movies, special appearances from filmmakers and celebrities and concessions delivered right to customer vehicles.

Walmart’s drive-in tour will run through October. Additional details will be announced closer to the start of the tour. More information can be found here: walmartdrive-in.com.

Galaxy Drive-In Theater- Ennis, TX

Construction for Galaxy Drive-In began in 2003 and opened on December 17, 2004 with three screens. They expanded to 4,then 5 and finally 7 screens. Expanded from one snack bar to two and converted from film to all digital this year. Now open 7 days a week!

Directions:

The Galaxy Drive-in is located in Garrett, Texas ‐ on Interstate 45, just north of Ennis at exit 255.
From Dallas, on I-45, go 20.5 miles south of the I-20 & I-45 interchange, and exit 258 for Parker Hill Road. After exiting take the very first right onto Parker Hill road, and then left to continue south on the I-45 frontage road. Galaxy Drive-In will be 2 miles down on your right. Google Maps
